Swilcan Bridge
Old Course, St Andrews
Account relating to St Andrews, April 1931
Och, the wind had already got itself up by the time we made it tae the first tee. A wee crowd had gathered along the road, as they aye do here, all bundled intae their dark wool coats against the biting sea breeze that howls in off the grey waters of West Sands. There's a dreich, ancient weight tae the ground beneath yer spikes on these links, I'll tell ye that.
By the time we'd made our way doon the broad sweep of the 18th fairway and found ourselves at the famous Swilcan Bridge, the pale sunlight had managed tae push through the heavy clouds just enough tae catch the stone. Even the quiet here's got history in it, so it has.
